1. Practice a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. Not everyone is born with a built-in sense of self confidence. Sometimes negative personal experiences or low self-esteem can make it hard to develop confidence in yourself. Embracing a growth mindset allows you to see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles. When you approach life with a growth mindset, you become more resilient and adaptable, which boosts your confidence.

Challenge yourself to learn new skills, take on new projects, and step out of your comfort zone. "I can't." should not be part of your vocabulary. Replace it with "I can't, YET." Embrace failure as a stepping stone to success and focus on the lessons learned rather than dwelling on mistakes. Remember, every setback is an opportunity to grow and improve.

2. Set Realistic Goals

Setting goals is essential for personal growth and development. However, it's crucial to set realistic goals that align with your abilities and circumstances. Unrealistic goals can lead to frustration and self-doubt, undermining your confidence. Everyone has unique strengths and talents, what are yours? Acknowledge your strengths, recognize what you're good at, and try to build on those things. This will help grow confidence in your own abilities.

Break down your larger goals into smaller, achievable milestones. These can be things like walking a mile, trying a new recipe, or planning a girl's night. Celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small. By setting realistic goals and consistently achieving them, you build confidence in your abilities and develop a sense of accomplishment. If you're anything like me, checking things off a list is its own love language.

3. Focus on Your Journey, Not Others'

One of the biggest confidence killers is comparing yourself to others. I've fallen victim to this multiple times. Social media is in our face more than ever, and when it's basically everyone's highlight reel, it's hard not to look at all of it and think, "Wow, their life is so much more successful, interesting, beautiful, joyful, (insert adjective here)..." Remember, everyone has their own unique journey and timeline. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your own progress and growth.

Appreciate your own strengths, talents, and accomplishments. Celebrate your uniqueness and embrace the things that make you special. When you shift your focus from others to yourself, you cultivate self-acceptance and confidence in your own abilities.

4. Do it for Yourself, Not Anyone Else

When you seek validation and approval from others, your confidence becomes dependent on their opinions. Instead, cultivate confidence by doing things for yourself, not to impress or please others. If we're consistently doing things for others' approval or because it's what we think they want, we're not truly invested in those things, and we will inevitably fall short of our true capabilities.

Ask yourself, "What do I truly want? What brings me joy and fulfillment?" Do you have a hobby you're passionate about that you can't seem to find time for? Make time for it! Chances are, if you're doing something you're passionate about you'll be more motivated to try harder and you'll build skills more quickly, which is an immediate confidence booster. Align your actions and decisions with your own values and desires. When you do things for yourself, you become more authentic and confident in your choices.

5. Embrace Self-Care

Self-care is not selfish; it's essential for cultivating confidence and overall well-being. Taking care of yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally allows you to show up as your best self. Talk yourself up! How is your self-talk affecting your confidence? You're never going to feel confident in yourself if you've got constant negative commentary running through your mind telling yourself you can't do it. Treat yourself like you would your best friend, cheer yourself on!

Make self-care a priority in your life. When you're facing a challenge, think of yourself like an athlete before an event. If you don't take care of yourself, your performance is going to fall short. Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Practice self-compassion and treat yourself with kindness. Prioritize your physical health by getting enough sleep, eating nourishing foods, and engaging in regular exercise.

6. Surround Yourself with Positive Influences

The people you surround yourself with have a significant impact on your confidence and self-esteem. Surround yourself with positive influences who uplift and support you. I love this quote from Tony Robbins, "The only thing that will change your life, change your business, change your relationships, is that you must raise your standards." Raise the standard for your inner circle. Seek out friends, mentors, or role models who inspire you and believe in your potential. Avoid toxic relationships or environments that bring you down or make you doubt yourself.

Surrounding yourself with positivity and encouragement can help you cultivate confidence and belief in yourself. You should not only surround yourself with those who support you but also those who challenge you. Confucius says, "If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room." If we have people who challenge us to grow, imagine what new heights we could reach, and what an amazing effect it would have on our self-confidence.

7. Celebrate Your Successes

Take the time to acknowledge and celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Often, we are quick to dismiss our achievements or downplay our accomplishments. Celebrating your successes reinforces your confidence and motivates you to keep pushing forward. Keep a journal or a gratitude jar to record your achievements and moments of growth. Reflect on how far you've come and the obstacles you've overcome. By celebrating your successes, you build a positive mindset and develop a deep-rooted belief in your abilities.

Remember, cultivating confidence is a journey, not a destination. It takes time, effort, and self-reflection. Embrace your unique journey and focus on your growth and progress. Comparison is indeed the thief of joy, so let go of comparisons and embrace your own path. You are capable, worthy, and deserving of confidence. Believe in yourself, and the world will believe in you too!

Confidence is like a superpower that can transform your life. It gives you the courage to pursue your dreams, take risks, and overcome challenges. However, cultivating confidence in yourself is not always easy, especially in a world that constantly compares and judges. But remember, as Theodore Roosevelt wisely stated, "Comparison is the thief of joy!"

A lack of self-confidence comes in many shapes and forms, and learning how to build confidence is an ongoing project for most of us – we are all a work in progress! So, let's explore some practical ways to cultivate confidence in yourself and embrace your unique journey.

This photo was taken on my way to the summit of the South Sister in central Oregon. Definitely one of the hardest, but most rewarding hikes I've ever done!
