Where do I start?

Being a mom is a full-time job, and finding time for yourself can often feel impossible. However, taking care of your physical health is essential, not only for yourself but also for your family. As Elle Woods famously said, "Exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy, happy people just don't shoot their husbands." My mom also liked to remind us that "If momma isn't happy, nobody's happy."

Starting a beginner workout routine and making small healthy changes to your diet can have a significant impact on your overall well-being. In this blog post, we will explore some practical tips on how to find time for exercise as a mom and make sustainable changes to your diet.

Finding Time for Exercise

As a mom, your days are likely filled with endless tasks and responsibilities. However, with a little planning and creativity, you can carve out time for exercise. Here are some tips to help you get started:

1. Schedule It

Just like any other important task, schedule your workout sessions. Find a time slot that works best for you, whether it's early in the morning, during nap time, or in the evening when the kids are asleep. It might not be the same time every day due to your schedule, and that's ok! Treat your workout as an appointment that cannot be missed.

2. Involve Your Kids

Getting your kids involved in your workout routine can be a fun way to spend time together and stay active. Consider activities such as dancing, yoga, or going for a family walk or bike ride. Not only will this allow you to exercise, but it will also teach your children the importance of physical activity. If I'm doing a shorter, less intense workout, I'll definitely ask my girls if they'd like to join in. Your kids may decide to opt out, and that's fine. Once you get a routine going, your kids will just consider it a normal part of the day and you won't feel like you're taking time away from them. YOU are important as well.

3. Break It Up

If finding a solid block of time for exercise seems impossible, break it up into smaller chunks throughout the day. Ten minutes here and there can add up to a significant workout. Incorporate exercises into your daily routine, such as squats while brushing your teeth or lunges while cooking dinner. You'd be amazed how sore your core can get if you're intentional about flexing it throughout the day.

4. Get Support

Reach out to your partner, family, or friends for support. Let them know about your fitness goals and ask for their help in finding time for exercise. They can assist with childcare or household tasks, allowing you to have some uninterrupted time for yourself. Bathtime or reading at bedtime are great examples that could give you an opportunity to sneak in a 20-30 minute workout!

Making Small Healthy Changes to Your Diet

Exercise alone is not enough to achieve optimal health. A balanced diet plays a crucial role in fueling your results. Here are some simple yet effective changes you can make to your diet:

1. Meal Planning

Plan your meals in advance to avoid relying on unhealthy convenience foods. Set aside some time each week to create a meal plan and grocery list. This will help you stay organized and make healthier choices when it comes to cooking. Portion out snacks to avoid what I like to call a "Snaccident". Oops, I ate 5 serving sizes of (insert snack food here). For me, chips are my kryptonite. I like to get the little square snack bags and keep pretzels handy. It satisfies my need for a salty crunch, but keeps calorie intake a little lower.

2. Include More Fruits and Vegetables

Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables, as they are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Aim to include a variety of colors in your meals to ensure you're getting a wide range of nutrients. Meal prep comes into play here as well. Throwing together a few salads loaded with veggies is an easy way to add them to your diet. These are my favorite containers if you're in need of some new ones. https://amzn.to/47FG8It (Amazon)

3. Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is vital for overall health and can also help with weight management. Carry a water bottle with you throughout the day and make it a habit to drink water regularly. I'm sure you've seen the water bottles that have the time of day goals printed on the sides, they work! I found one at Costco and use it all the time. 4. Reduce Processed Foods

Processed foods are often high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and preservatives. Try to limit your intake of processed snacks, sugary drinks, and fast food. Opt for whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible. Nuts are an easy, healthy snack packed with protein! Choose whole grains when possible and make sure you're checking labels for ingredients and trying to choose healthier options.

5. Practice Mindful Eating

Eating mindfully involves paying attention to your body's hunger and fullness cues. Slow down and savor each bite, enjoying the flavors and textures of your food. This can help prevent overeating and promote a healthier relationship with food. Serve yourself smaller portions and let your food settle a bit before deciding whether to go back for seconds!

You got this.

As a mom, finding time for yourself can be challenging, but it's essential for your overall well-being. By incorporating an exercise routine and making small healthy changes to your diet, you can take care of yourself while setting a positive example for your family. Remember, it's not about perfection but about making sustainable changes that you can stick to in the long run. Start small, stay consistent, and celebrate every step towards a healthier you.
